Rationale

Some editors wish to link to their note on a character from their critical paratexts or from their annotation file. LEMDO has created a linking prefix specifically for linking to notes on characters from files other than the modernized text. This documentation will guide you through when and how to use that prefix.

Practice: Encode a Link to a Character

While in most cases editors do not need to tag every time a character’s name is mentioned in their critical paratexts or annotations, you may wish to direct readers towards the note that you have written on the character in the character list of your modernized text. If you want to do so, follow these steps: Tag the text that you want to have a hyperlink on with the ref element. Put a target attribute on the ref element. Give the target attribute a value of role: followed by the xml:id of the character. Note that you do not need to create a path with the hash character; our role: triggers processing that supplies the full pathway.
