               <head>Rationale</head>
               <p>
                  <mentioned>Finis</mentioned> commonly appears at the end of playbooks. <mentioned>Finis</mentioned> also occasionally appears within playbooks. For example, in the case of the quarto <title level="m">Pericles</title>, <mentioned>Finis</mentioned> appears twice, once before and once after Gower’s final chorus; likewise, in the folio <title level="m">Henry IV, Part 2</title>, <mentioned>Finis</mentioned> appears before the Epilogue.</p>
               <p>Even when <mentioned>Finis</mentioned> is the last word of the text, LEMDO does not treat this word as back matter, even though it is unspoken text. We include it in the body of the text, just like the printer’s headpiece and the main title that conventionally appear on the first page above the spoken text are included in the <ref target="doc:lemdo_spec_body"><gi>body</gi></ref> element even though they are unspoken text.</p>
               <p>Note that <mentioned>Finis</mentioned> goes in the <ref target="doc:lemdo_spec_body"><gi>body</gi></ref> element even if it is followed by a cast list, colophon, or imprint. However, if the <mentioned>Finis</mentioned> appears at the end of the cast list, colophon, or imprint, you will include it in the <ref target="doc:lemdo_spec_back"><gi>back</gi></ref> element. Do not move where <mentioned>Finis</mentioned> appears in the transcription.</p>

               <p>Wrap the word <mentioned>Finis</mentioned> and any terminal punctuation in the <ref target="doc:lemdo_spec_label"><gi>label</gi></ref> element.<note type="editorial">Readers who are well versed in TEI might wonder why LEMDO does not use the <ref target="doc:lemdo_spec_trailer"><gi>trailer</gi></ref> for <mentioned>Finis</mentioned>. The <ref target="doc:lemdo_spec_trailer"><gi>trailer</gi></ref> element is a member of <ident>model.divBottomPart</ident>, which means it <quote>can occur only at the end of a text division</quote>. Given the case of the quarto <title level="m">Pericles</title>, we anticipate seeing other instances of <mentioned>Finis</mentioned> in places where <ref target="doc:lemdo_spec_trailer"><gi>trailer</gi></ref> is not permitted. The <title level="m">TEI Guidelines</title>’ definition of <ref target="doc:lemdo_spec_label"><gi>label</gi></ref>—<quote>any label or heading used to identify part of a text</quote>— is loose enough to cover our particular use case.</note>
               </p>
               <p>Do <emph>not</emph> add a <att>type</att>. Even though we usually add <att>type</att> to the <ref target="doc:lemdo_spec_label"><gi>label</gi></ref> element with the <val>heading</val> in other contexts, <mentioned>Finis</mentioned> is clearly not a heading.</p>
               <p>
                  <mentioned>Finis</mentioned> is often centered, italicized, and/or letterspaced. By default, <mentioned>Finis</mentioned> will render as centered in roman type with no letterspacing. To indicate that <mentioned>Finis</mentioned> is in italic type or is letterspaced in your copytext, add a <att>rendition</att> attribute to the <ref target="doc:lemdo_spec_label"><gi>label</gi></ref> element with a pre-composed rendition (i.e., <val>rnd:italic</val> or <val>rnd:letterspace</val>). For more information on using pre-formed renditions, see <title level="a"><ref target="doc:learn_encodeStyleInline">Encode Inline Style Using Pre-Formed Values in Semi-Diplomatic Transcriptions</ref></title>.</p>
               <p>If the typography cannot be described using one of our pre-formed values, you may style it using the <att>style</att> attribute. For more information on using the <att>style</att> attribute, see <title level="a"><ref target="doc:learn_encodeStyleAdvanced">Encode Inline Style Using CSS and CSS Flex in Semi-Diplomatic Transcriptions</ref></title>.</p>
               <p>If <mentioned>Finis</mentioned> in your copytext is not centered, use the <att>place</att> attribute to indicate where on the page it is.
